Reading Log #1: Harry Potter and the Cursed Child
The main characters of the story are Albus Potter and Scorpius Malfoy. Albus Potter is the son of Harry Potter who is famous for defeating Lord Voldemort at the Battle of Hogwarts. Albus is a dynamic character. In the beginning of the story he is shy and scared about going to Hogwarts. He is scared that he will not be as good of a wizard as his dad was. Over time Albus starts to hate his dad and doesn't care about what people think of him. In the end Albus is ashamed of what he did and for hating on his own dad. Scorpius is also a dynamic character. In the beginning he was very shy and quiet because people thought he was the son of Voldemort. Over the entire story he gains a lot of confidence when he finds out he is not Voldemort's son. Albus and Scorpius are best friends throughout the whole story. Even though lots of people tried to separate them, they always ended up as friends. Scorpius's dad, Draco Malfoy, is a dynamic character as well. In the previous books Draco would be a bully to Harry Potter but now, Harry and Draco are good friends. In this book, Harry Potter has not changed. He still is funny and scared about the safety of others.He still stayed the same.
Reading Log #2: Harry Potter and the Cursed Child
During the book, the conflict is that Albus Potter and Scorpius Malfoy wanted to time travel back in time to save Cedric from death. There are 3 changes in the main conflict throughout the story. One was to save Cedric,another was to fix everything they messed up, and the other one was to stop Delphi from killing Harry Potter and make Voldemort the leader of the world. The whole problem started when Albus wanted to help and by saving Cedric. That was the main conflict for a while until they time traveled but messed up the entire world. Their new mission was to fix the mistakes they did in the past so that they can go back to the future they used to live in. After they did that, it is revealed that Delphi, Albus's friend and crush was the evil daughter of Voldemort. Albus was heartbroken knowing that the girl he liked was evil and wanted to murder his dad. In the end, they fix 2 of the 3 problem. They go back in time and bring back the future they had before and they defeated Delphi. They failed in saving Cedric. Professor McGonagall admitted that they failed when she said "Your intentions to save Cedric were honorable, if misguided." Albus and Scorpius trying to save Cedric and trying to fix the mess they made were all part of the Rising action. The part when they stop Delphi is part of the climax.
Reading Log #3: The Tales of Beedle the Bard- The Wizard and the Hopping Pot
During this tale an old man helps his non-magical neighbors with the magic he has. The old man possesses wizarding skills and instead of bragging about them he prefers to just help them in secret. Every day the old mans neighbors would go to his door and ask for help. What he would do is pretend to make a cure in his brewing pot when he would really use his wand to cast a spell to make the person better. The old man is a static character. As stated in the book "This well-beloved wizard lived to a goodly age, then died..." The old man stayed humble and caring throughout story. He isn't the main character though. The main character enters the story when the old man dies and he leaves his old pot to his son. His son was arrogant and didn't want to help the neighborhood like his father did. He believed that anyone who couldn't produce there own magic would be a waste of his time. The young man didn't know that his father cursed the pot to bother the son any time he would neglect helping the neighbors. The pot would grow warts,spit out slugs, spill water, make really loud noise, and jump around following the old man's son. Eventually, the pot did overwhelm the young man and he decided to help out the neighbors. Any time he neglected this, the pot would again bother him until he decided to help again. The young man is a dynamic character. He turns into a nice helping man like his father. It states in the book that " But from that day forward, the wizard helped the villagers, like his father before him, lest the pot cast off its slipper, and begin to hop once more."
Reading Log #4: The Tales of Beedle the Bard- The Fountain of Fair Fortune
In this tale, it talks about four people trying to get to the Fountain of Fair Fortune. The Fountain bathes one person a year in fortune, luck, and prosperity. The first witch, Asha, was sick with a malady that no healer could cure. The second witch, Altheda, had been robbed of her home,her gold, and her wand by an evil wizard. The third witch,Amata, had been deserted by a man she really loved. The three witches decided to go together and once they got to the fountain, they would decide who deserved to bathe in the Fountain of Fair Fortune. During, the tournament, Amata had accidentally brought along a knight to help them in the tournament. The knight was not that good and he knew he would not use the fountain since his quest was in helping one of them get to the fountain. After a long time of passing tough obstacles, they finally got to the fountain. They were going to decide who would bathe in the fountain but Asha the sick which fell to the ground on her knees and was in serious pain. The other two witches wanted to drag her to the fountain but couldn't because Asha did not want to be touched. Seizing the only chance they had to save her, Altheda seized some of the flowers that decorated the fountain and put them in some water. Asha drank the potion and she was cured. Asha suggested they let Althede bathe in the fountain but Arlthede grabbed some flowers and said to let Amata bathe in the fountain because she would be really rich for the cure she just found. Amata then said that while thinking about the man she realized that she is more happy without him. They all agreed to let the knight bathe in the fountain. The knight did as he was told and he bathed in the fountain. The knight was full of glory from the fountain. He saw Amata the kindest and most beautiful woman he had ever seen and asked for her hand in marriage. Amata realized that she had the right man in front of her and said yes. The four witches left together and they lived long and happy lives. All of the characters are dynamic. Amata loses her depression, Asha gets cured from the sickness, and Althede doesn't feel unprotected and poor anymore. The knight was now also full of glory and power he didn't have before.
Reading Log #5: The Tales of Beedle the Bard- The Warlocks Hairy Heart
The main character throughout the entire strory is a warlock who's name is never revealed. He is the main character of the entire short story. The warlock is handsome,talented, and rich but he is also arrogant, selfish, and cold hearted. He really cold-hearted and believed that love was a sign of weakness. In page forty-three it states," There was once a handsome, rich, and talented young warlock, who observed that his friends grew foolish when they fell in love, gamboling and preening, losing their appetites and their dignity. The young warlock resolved never to fall prey to such weakness, and employed Dark Arts to ensure his immunity." The reason the warlock was this aloof was because deep into the dungeon locked in a chest, the warlock used Dark Art spells to rip out his heart and lock it in a chest. Many women tried to get him to love them but all failed pathetically. In page forty-five it states," In due course, the warlock's aged parents died. Their son did not mourn them; on the contrary, he considered himself blessed by their demise." The warlock and his parents never really got along because of how distant the warlock would get. His parents thought that it was temporary and sooner or later he would fall in love with a girl, but it never happened. In the end, the warlock tricked a girl into following him into a dungeon just so he could rip out her heart and put it in his chest where he had a vacant hole where his original heart was missing. He took out his own caged heart out of his cage so he could show the girl he did have a heart after all but the heart, angry and worried that it would be locked away again, set itself right where it should be and filled the empty hole. The warlock could not get it out and ended up ripping it out, which led to his death. The warlock is a static character that goes through no change in the entire story; he stays cold hearted,selfish, and arrogant all the way.
Reading Log #6: The Tales of Beedle the Bard- Babbitty Rabbitty and Her Cackling Stump
In the story, the main characters are a king, a charlatan, and Babbitty, a skilled witch. The king of the town wasn't a wizard, but wanted to become the only one in the entire town. He raised an army of witch hunters to hunt down magical people. He opened a job asking for someone with great magical skills to show him how to be a great sorcerer. A charlatan who was very cunning and smart, took this opportunity as a way to get rich and take advantage of the foolish king. The charlatan made the king give him large amounts of gold,slver, and rubies so that he could buy a wand for the king. The charlatan kept the supplies and just broke 2 twigs from a tree and told the foolish king that they were powerful wands. During the practices the king said enchantments but nothing would happen. Babbity would watch untill one day she saw the king fail so miserably she cackled loudly. The king, embarrased, yelled at the charlatan and said that tomorrow he will show everyone his magical skills and if he fails, he will kill the charlatan. The charlatan made Babbitty help him and made her hid behind a bush so that when the king performed spells, she would make them happen, and make it look like the king was actually doing them. All was going well untill the king tried to revive a dead person, No spell in the wizarding world could revive a dead person so Babbitty didn't even try. The people laughed at the king. The king wanted to kill the charlatan but he claimed that it was the witch behind the bush that was blocking his powers. Everyone chased after Babbitty untill she stopped, transformed into a rabbit,and hid under a tree. The witch hunters thought she transformed into a tree so the king ordered them to cut the tree. THe witch hunters cut the tree and Babbitty laugh and laughed teasing them how she cannot die by being cut in half. The charlatan confessed he was a fraud and was dragged into the dungeons. Babbitty scared the king into allowing all witches and wizards to perform magic freely without being hunted. The king is a static character who stays foolish throughout the entire story. The charlatan is also a static character who remains cunning and tries to take advantage of everyone for his own benefit. Babbitty is a dynamic character and changes throughout the story. She goes from being a scared witch to brave and fighting the king.
Reading Log #7: The Tales of Beetle the Bard- The Tale of The Three Brothers
The main characters of the entire story are 3 young brothers and Death. Three young brothers were taking a trip when they came across a deadly river. They were really good wizards so they easily built a bridge and walked across it. Death got made and felt cheated since most people failed to get across without a struggle, and most die. He pretended to congratulate them and told them that he would give them anything they wanted. The oldest brother asks for a wand more powerful than any other wand in existence. Death gives him the wand and the third brother continues his journey. The second brother was arrogant and he wanted to humiliate Death even more by asking if he could have a wand that could resurrect people who have died. Death gives him a stone capable of bringing the dead back. The third brother, didn't trust Death so he asked for a cloak of invisibility that can never stop being invisible, and can not be seen no matter what. Death unwillingly gives him the cloak and the third brother puts it on and continues his journey. The first brother fights in a duel in which he wins and kills his challenger. He boasts about the most powerfull wand being in his possession. A thief later sneaks into his house and slits the brothers throat. Death had claimed the first brother. The second brother used the stone to bring back his fiancee who died. The problem was that she was not completely alive. She was sad,depressed, and didn't belong. The second brother killed himself so that he could truly reuinite himself with her and Death claimed the second brother. The third brother hid under his cloak of invisibility and was not found by Death. Death searched and searched but did not find him until the third brother had reached a great age and passed the cloak to his son. The third brother greeted Death as an old friend and gladly went with him. Death is a static character because he never truly changes how he acts. He always is eager for people to die and join him. The first brother is also static since he died being arrogant and boastful. The second brother was a dynamic character since he was arrogant but then was sad,depressed, and unselfish. The third brother is a static character since he is always wise and patient.
